Calathea Makoyana is a member of the Marantaceae family and is native to the rainforests of Brazil. It is an evergreen perennial plant with large, oval-shaped leaves that are typically around 12 to 18 inches in length. The leaves have a distinctive pattern featuring alternating light and dark green stripes, reminiscent of the eyespots on a peacock's tail, which is how it gets its common name. The undersides of the leaves are usually a deep purple or burgundy color. The plant's leaves have a velvety texture and are held on long petioles, giving it an elegant appearance. The foliage also has the fascinating behavior of "praying," which means the leaves will open and close in response to light changes, with leaves folding upward in the evening and unfurling in the morning.

🔆 Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. A location near a bright window with filtered light is ideal.
🌡️Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C) during the day and slightly cooler temperatures at night. Avoid extreme temperature fluctuations.
💦Humidity: High humidity levels are essential. Aim for humidity levels of 50% or higher. If the environment is dry, consider using a humidity tray or a room humidifier.
🚰 Watering: Bottom water this plant when the top 2" of soil are dry to touch. Use distilled or purified water, as tap water may contain minerals that can harm the plant.
